About-face: Punjab admits foreign funding to seminaries

The Punjab government formally admitted on Tuesday that seminaries were receiving foreign funding, seeking immediate help of the country’s top investigation agency – Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) – to obtain actionable data for kicking off a crackdown against the beneficiaries. A senior police officer informed the Senate panel that “mostly foreign funding received by seminaries and madrassas in Punjab is through private channels, for instance hundi or hawala, and personal visits of persons to collect donations”.

Rs. 2.40 billion for non-formal basic education to 20 lakh illiterate persons

Provincial Minister for Excise & Taxation Law and Finance Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said that Punjab government distributed solar lamps among the 2 lakh students last year with a cost of Rs. 2.5 billion under Ujala Programme so that load shedding could not disrupt their study.
