PHEC to pay more attention to technical education
The Punjab Higher Education Commission plans to focus more on interventions in the higher education sector. `The commission will not do anything in duplication or entering into a conflict with the federal HEC,` said PHEC Chairman Prof Dr. Nizamuddin.

Police suspect seminaries in Punjab also receive foreign funding
Punjab police suspect that 147 seminaries in the province receive funds from abroad, the police chief of the province informed a Senate committee here on Wednesday.
But since `no actionable intelligence` is available against them, police have put them under constant watch, Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Sukhera told the Senate standing committee on rules of procedure and privileges. He also shared the list of the suspect seminaries with the committee.
No nation can prosper without creation of new knowledge and for that purpose more PhD teachers are needed so that education can prosper in the country, said Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran.

The Sindh High Court Circuit Bench Larkana has directed Education Director Larkana Division Anwar Khokhar to open 500 closed schools of the division and submit a report by April 17 as to why these schools were closed since over a decade despite a number of recent appointments.
KU cancelled papers rescheduled
KU has announced new dates for the papers which were canceled on January 29, 30 and 31. According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the BA part two paper of January 29 will be held on March 7, BA part one paper of January 30 will be held on March 6, and the BA part two paper of January 31 will be held on March 5. The examination centres and time will remain the same.
PMA blames PMDC for deterioration of medical education
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Wednesday expressed `serious concerns` over deterioration of education in the country`s medical colleges and teaching hospitals and said the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) which was supposed to register graduates, monitor and regularise medical education had `indulged in anti-patients and anti-doctors activities`.

HEC: scholarship criteria
THIS refers to this year`s merit criteria for oversees scholarship batch 6. In batch 5, I applied with a GAT score of 65 but the cut-off merit was 70. This year af ter a lot of hard work and securing a score of 81 after five attempts, I applied again, but still could not succeed. Confused, when I checked the cut-off merit there was no one near 81 marks.
Costly higher education
THE start of this week brought me disturbing news. I reached the Department of Life Sciences in Islamic University of Bahawalpur where I am a student, to find a Rs18,000 fee charge-sheet awaiting me with a day left in the deadline.
Does our education system teach us to memorise the content of our course books, rather than understanding it? Wistfully yes. It’s remorseful that in our Government run education institutes teachers emphasise on memorising rather than make the students understand the subject.
