Walk for Education – Global Action Week 2013

Jhang: Over 1,000 residents from across the city of Jhang took part in a Walk for Education to highlight the state of education in the country, where 25 million children are out of school. The event, held to coincide with the Global Action Week for Education 2013, saw residents of Jhang, saw participants walk 2 kms through the famous Garah Mahraja Main Bazaar area of the city.

Organized by Alif Ailaan, Walk for Education is part of a larger campaign that urges political leaders and policy makers to make sure every child in Pakistan is enrolled in school by 2015.

Commenting on the initiative, the Principal of Garah Mahraja Government School said, “This is the first time people in Jhang have come out to support education, despite the sensitive security issues in the city. This shows how urgent and dire the situation of education is, that people from across all religious and ideological spectrums have joined hands for the issue of education, shedding all the differences.”

Those who participated in the walk included the chief officers of the education department, school principals and teachers, students and parents.
