Khyber Pakhtunkhua

Lacking urgency: Educationists flay govt for failure to enact Article 25-A

Education activists expressed concern over the four-year delay in enacting Article 25-A and urged the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly to approve the draft bill at the earliest.

During a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, activists said after the 18th Amendment, civil society organisations and the education department prepared a draft bill for free and compulsory education in the province. However, both the previous Awami National Party (ANP) regime and the current Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) failed to turn the bill into a law. They pointed out 2.5 million children across the province were out of school and claimed the current government had not constructed a single school for them.

The event was organised by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (Sparc) in collaboration with ActionAid at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday. Editorials/Opinions

Fostering a sound value system By Ainee Shehzad

The Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) categorically stipulates that the teaching of all subject curriculam should support the development of learners who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged. Agreeing with the CIE, we should acknowledge that the world can only improve if the next generation has these attributes that make it empathetic and concerned about the social and physical environment. Schooling is not just about teaching various subjects; it should also focus on holistic development of the student, given the importance of this powerful mode of social instruction. As leaders in this process, the onus falls on teachers to carefully reflect on how they are contributing towards developing these essential attributes. The fostering of these attributes should not be treated asde rigueur; they should be taken as a critical commitment with powerful long-term implications.

Children pay the price

Well all know that the Pakistani state is weak, its writ is limited, and our rulers are indifferent. But there is something particularly heartbreaking about the impact of this decay when it is felt by the most vulnerable members of society: our children. Particularly when the children themselves are from poor backgrounds, and come from conflict-ridden areas of the country.

Letters to the Editor

Our ideological education

This is apropos Yaqoob Khan Bangash’s article, “Our ideological education” (November 27). The writer seems to have confused the acts of displaying the Israel stall at a university exhibition and the disfiguring of the statue of Dr Woolner. The two incidents are totally different. The Israeli stall was not critisiced while keeping the ‘ideology of Pakistan’ in mind, as the writer seems to imply in his article. The criticism was about the fact that Israel is not recognised by Pakistan, so its stall should not have been displayed in honour of the sensitivities of the state. The people who arranged that stall, and in particular the administration of the university in question, should have kept that fact under consideration. The display of such a stall cannot be justified on any grounds in a country such as Pakistan.

Overloaded school vans

Every child who travels in a school bus needs approximately 13 inches of sitting space. Students of senior classes require more. However, in school vans, without any regard, three or four students are being forcefully accommodated on a seat. Others have to travel standing due to first-come-first-serve basis.

Language and science

One fails to understand why science subjects, particularly at the intermediate and bachelor’s levels, are being taught in Urdu. When the suggested/prescribed books of science subjects are in English and students have to prepare themselves for tests and assessments in the same language, the medium of teaching cannot be some other language but English.

Modernizing syllabus

Our children lag behind when it comes to modern education. Their syllabus is out-dated. If we see other countries they have modernised their educational tools according to the changes that occur in this technological age. But our students are being taught the same old methods.
