How to improve Pakistan’s future prospects? By Talat Masood

In the long term, it is quality and the spread of education that will determine productivity of the people. The general foundation of science and technology, which has been the driver of change in many developing countries, is very weak in Pakistan and little attention is being paid to address this. Independent research institutions are practically absent. Similarly, the health sector is in complete disarray and grossly neglected, especially in rural areas. Pakistan is one country that is shamelessly reminded every day of its inability to control the rising menace of polio. Lack of education and the poor security situation are the primary reasons for its spread. Serious and sustained effort in improving the standard of education, developing a viable health sector and making concerted effort to defeat insurgency can greatly influence the destiny of Pakistan.

Pitfalls of English by Zubeida Mustafa

The Society for the Advancement of Education launched its report on English-language learning in Sindh schools. The ambiguity that marks parents’ and educators’ understanding of the role of language — especially English — in school education was evident on this occasion.

SAHE’s executive director, Abbas Rashid, however, was spot on when he identified his concerns: does the early introduction of English in school help or hinder learning? What happens to the learning of English itself?

Social reform ‘charter’

In the midst of politicking and various crises — both natural and man-made — the social sector in Pakistan, especially where the state’s responsibility regarding health and education is concerned, has been relegated to the back burner. While issues such as putting out-of-school children into the classroom and improving health service delivery inevitably surface during election time, once in power, the political parties do little to back up their lofty promises.

Need for inclusive curriculum

I would like to condemn the decision taken by the Education Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to eliminate a critical and significant chapter from primary school textbooks, which detailed global issues pertaining to human rights. After in-depth content analysis, I came to the conclusion that the subject matter of the chapter is close to reality and is extremely important to share with students.
