Editorials/Opinions

The price of my child by Aisha Fayyazi Sarwari

The modifications outside my children’s school are seemingly significant: fortified walls, concrete barriers, barbed wire and the ageing sniper who is often caught scratching his ear, but the reality is different — the walls are just as penetrable and the children just as susceptible to a terror attack just like the Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar was on that horrendous December day. Dropping them off at school knowing this is keeping with the Abrahamic tradition of sacrifice that I cannot fathom but participate in nonetheless.

The madressah factor by Muhammad Amir Rana

PAKISTAN’S madressah sector is increasingly being seen as a critical factor in the pervading insecurity in the country, particularly after the announcement of the National Action Plan. The fact is reflected in the decision taken by the Islamabad administration to close madressahs situated near Parade Avenue for one week on the eve of the March 23 military parade. According to media reports, the decision was taken on the advice of intelligence agencies.

Pseudo research and higher education by Professor Yusaf Malik

Education is the Noah’s ark of any nation, outside which is nothing but deluge. Every country tries to set a premium on establishing prestigious academic norms to compete with the global rat-race. Higher education matters and serves as a vigorous impetus to overall national development. It equips the budding generation with the high-tech weaponry of witticism and repertoire of up-to-date learning.

Is higher education worth it? By Hussain Nadim

There was a time, perhaps during our parents’ generation, when the higher education meant two to three years of acquiring a quality Bachelor’s degree. Moreover, the majority would seek a professional degree; two to three years of LLB or an engineering degree, and only the class-toppers would take up a five-year medical degree.

Rote learning

Sir: Does our education system teach us to memorize the content of our course books rather than understanding it? Sadly, yes. It is a matter of remorse that in our government education boards, teachers only emphasise memorizing syllabus books in a given time without understanding and proper learning. Moreover, these are the same old course books that are being taught to students year after year without any further addition or improvement. The world is moving fast scientifically and technologically but we are still lagging behind with the same rusted learning course without any clear concepts and understanding.
