Privatizing Free Education           By Basil Nabi Malik

ARTICLE 25-A of the Constitution of Pakistan, 1973, declares that `the state shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to 16 years in such manner as may be determined by law`. The article further fortified the right to education as already enshrined in the constitution, and has been heralded by many as the basis of a new era of priority. Some of the recently dissolved legislatures had enacted legislation delineating the mechanisms for the enforcement of the right to free education.
