A plea from the heart by Wasat Ullah Khan

I have heard since childhood that spending 1.5-2% of our GDP on Education will not yield any fruits and our society will not be classified as an “educated” one. The only way we can bring true change in our society is if we spend around 7% of GDP on Education continuously for the coming 15-20 years. Sometimes what matters more than the allocated amount is whether or not the amount is being put to use and for the needed facilities. Alif Ailaan’s yearly district ranking report helps show that while the education budget for AJK is not much more than that of Balochsitan, the former is still performing much better and has better standards and results.

Lacklustre performance by Javid Husain

The Pakistan Economic Survey (2014-15) and the budget for 2015-16 presented by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar reflect the lacklustre performance of the Federal Government. Another disturbing feature of our economy is the low level of expenditure on education and health. According to the Pakistan Economic Survey (2014-15), our national expenditure on education was only 2.1% of GDP in 2013-14 as against the UNESCO recommended target of 4% of GDP.

Enabling the differently-abled By Dilaira Dubash

Nearly six months have passed since the deadly attack on the Army Public School took place on December 16, 2014, claiming more than 150 lives — mostly children — and leaving many injured. But what has the nation done about it thus far? We visited the injured at hospitals and offered them a few reassuring words, sent survivors on a state-funded ‘healing’ trip to China and renamed 107 government-owned schools across the province to commemorate the slain students — all short-term measures to reintegrate them into normal life and get rid of the guilt we felt for not being able to protect them.

Commercialisation Of Education

Educated, skilled and hardworking people are the biggest and invaluable asset of any country and Pakistan is not an exception. The countries, which have attained the status of development economics, owe much to these attributes. One of the reasons for the current dismal state of affairs in Pakistan continues to be the apathy of the successive Governments which did not realize the importance of education and vocational training.
