History of educational development by Irfan Muzaffar

In Pakistan it will be difficult to recall conversations on these important aspects of education. What we do see, however, is a proliferation of discussions on policy in the country. It seems there has been emerging a policy discourse in education in Pakistan much earlier than the education itself. We must recognise that there exists another kind of discourse on education as well, which does not necessarily target education policy. Rather it digs deeper into the problems of Instruction, Curriculum, Assessment, and Education Policyfrom multiple perspectives.

Inequality rising by Ghazal Zulfiqar

The Pakistani have-nots include not only the 20 million out-of-school children but also the millions enrolled in the country’s non-performing public schools and sub-standard low-fee private schools. These children will never have the same options the children from the elite private schools of this country do.

Elementary education by Tehreem Fatima

There has been much talk and debate regarding quality education in Pakistan. Ironically, they all revolve around mostly the types, sources and content of education instead of stages, particularly the most crucial and decisive stage i.e., elementary education. There has been little progress in recent years in developing new and existing programmes for adolescent learners in government schools at elementary level.

Am I a citizen of Pakistan? By Zia Ullah Ranjha

Now, many Pakistani citizens seem to have this question in mind: Are we the citizens of Pakistan? They are Pakistani citizen by birth but do they enjoy the rights of citizenship? Do they have the right to life, the right to health, and the right to education? Even those who go to school are not getting proper education. Many schools are working like commercial enterprises and seem least interested in imparting education. Moreover, there is a dual rather multi-layered education system in Pakistan and a poor child cannot get access to quality schools.

Education in Pakistan by Zarmina Hassan

In Pakistan the quality of education has a declining trend because of high dropout rate, defective curricula, dual medium of instruction, cheating in examinations, low enrolment rate and overcrowded classrooms. The quality of teachers is also poor in Pakistan. A low level of educational qualification is required to become a primary school teacher which includes ten years of schooling and an eleven-month certificate programme when students need better teachers at primary level so their base could be strong.

What has Malala done for Pakistan? by Shehzad Ghias

Malala is now a global symbol for children’s education, not just children in Pakistan. We should be proud that she is a Pakistani. The ‘I am Malala’ campaign does not refer to Malala the person but includes every single girl fighting for their right to education around the world. Malala was thrown into the global limelight after the shooting but she was already a well-known activist and advocate for the right to education by then.

A short analysis of the Federal Budget Estimates 2014-205 and 2015-2016 by Prof Dr Qais Aslam

Of the Rs3482.2 billion current expenditures envisaged in Budget 2015-2016, 70.26 per cent will be spent on general public services, the rest 6.74 per cent would be spent as — 3.0 per cent on public order and safety; two per cent on Education; and 1.7 per cent on economic affairs. Why development is always accorded the least priority and why money needed for the uplift of the people has to be more difficult to come by than money needed for the salaries and perks of those that have usually failed in their task of providing service delivery of social protection, law and order, education, heath, safe drinking water, justice and even electricity to the tax payers and the general public at large.

We need to revisit our academic necropolises to improve our global rank by Dr. Munawar A. Anees & Maryam Iraj

The Times Higher Education Asia University Ranking 2015 is out and so is Pakistan from this list of Top 100 Universities. Across the border, there is a lament that India lagged behind and only 9 universities could make it to the top. Instead of taking jibe at others, let us visit our own academic necropolises and rank them in the like of oft-touted “W” category devised by the Higher Education Commission. That would be no faking the ranks.
