Gomal University to have sub-campus in Tank

District Nazim Mustafa Khan Kundi on Thursday said the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved Rs 10 million for the establishment of sub-campus of the Gomal University in Tank. Seminar criticizes KP govt’s failure to improve education sector

Participants at a seminar on Thursday criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s failure to improve the education sector in the province despite making claims. The seminar titled”An analysis of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Budget” was organized by AlifAilaan a non-governmental organization. The seminar was attended by a good number of current and former parliamentarians, district government representatives, and people from the civil society. Interestingly, no-one from the Education Department attended the moot.

AIOU System ridden with several flaws

University rankings

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016 has revealed that no Pakistani university could find a place among the top 500 world universities. Pakistan produces about 445,000 university graduates and 10,000 computer science graduates annually. A number of institutions of higher learning are active in the country but the HEC recognizes 177 institutions.

Cloud data center inaugurated at HEC

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday inaugurated the Cloud Data Centre at the Higher Education Commission. The HEC has established the center in a building donated by the Huawei Technologies that aims to facilitate universities to become part of the world-class research environment. The Minister was accompanied by China’s Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong, HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and HEC Executive Director Dr. Arshad Ali.

No delay in academic staff recruitment

Punjab Higher Education Secretary Irfan Ali has affirmed that the process of academic staff’s transfer/posting will be completed in few days. Rejecting the rumors that new recruitments in government colleges across the province were delayed due to the failure of the online system. The Secretary categorically said that the process would be completed in few days and merit policy would strictly be followed. “Our online system is working properly and computerized data of all the colleges is available. There is no chance of violation of transfer policy,” Mr. Irfan said.

USAID pledges $120m for building 120 schools in Sindh

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has pledged $165 million in the grant for the Sindh Basic Education Programme under which 120 schools will be constructed all over Sindh, said a statement issued by the provincial government on Thursday. The announcement came after US Consul General Brian Heath, the consulate general’s new political/economic chief, Edward Burkhalter, and outgoing political/economic chief Chad Peterson called on Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah at the CM House.

Technical Board increased the fees structure

FUU announces results

Federal Urdu University has declared the results of different disciplines held in December 2015. 243 students took the examinations out of which 187 students were declared successful. The pass percentage was 76.95.

British Council opens library in Karachi after 14 years

The British Council has launched its library here in Sindhi capital after a period of 14 years. The launching ceremony held at the British Council Library which was attended by Governor Dr. Ishratul Ebad Khan, Sindh Special Assistant Sharmila Farooqui and British Deputy High Commissioner in Karachi Belinda Lewis. Welcoming the guests, British Council’s acting country director Jim Booth said that the British libraries in Karachi and Lahore would serve as a hub for cultural development, integration and strengthen the cultural relationship between Pakistan and the UK.

Splitting swat

It is hard to estimate the population of a country where national census has not been carried out for 18 years, yet many reports in Pakistan suggest that the population of the country has exceeded 200 million. In 2010, soon after the Swat crisis, there was news of dividing the Swat district into two. What happened to that plan we have yet to know but the division of Swat into two districts still holds water for a number of reasons. Despite the uproar of the ‘education emergency’ in the province many high and higher secondary schools in upper valleys of Swat are still without principals and staff.
